There's an endless list of reasons why we choose to work at Six Feet Up. Here are the main ones:
Human-Friendly
It's fashionable to promote work environments as "green" and "eco-friendly" to show a pledge to the planet. At Six Feet Up, we go further and strive for a human-friendly environment. We focus on building a great company culture that values each person's skills, natural abilities and interests.
This begins with an acknowledgement that everyone has different needs starting with technical equipment and going all the way to our physical environment. Some of us are on an exercise ball, some are wrapped in their favorite blankets, others work standing up. A small group of Sixies swear by their treadmill desks. Most of us have cats on our desks, or dogs on our laps. At a time, we even had a pig and a skunk as emotional support animals.
And it's not unusual to hear or see a baby cooing next to a new parent, a toddler playing with cubes quietly in one corner, or an unwashed teenager minecrafting in the background.
Inclusive & Diverse by Strategy
We, at Six Feet Up, have always been inclusive and diverse by choice. Frankly, we see this policy (see our Non-Discrimination Policy below) as being a strategic advantage. We understand the value of having a gender and age-balanced staff. We love hiring team members with uncommon backgrounds and characteristics as we know this myriad of different and innovative perspectives is only making us stronger. This approach has proved very resilient through inevitable ups and downs and a huge asset when problem solving.
Flexibility
The average person spends a third of their life working. Thanks to ubiquitous emails, instant messages and social media pokes, we are now all carrying work into our personal lives. We believe it is therefore only fair for personal matters to squeeze in between office commitments.
Sixies are paid by the hour and have the ability to "catch up" after a medical appointment, a baseball game or any other personal occurrence that takes place during business hours. Of course this is only possible with careful coordination with the team, which is why good communication is at the core of our success.
Sixies have been known to save the day from places like hospitals, gas stations, pedicure spas, medical offices, cruise ships, taekwondo tournaments, conferences and other playgrounds.
Open
We carry our commitment to open source into company management. We ensure transparency by sharing company news, celebrations, strategy and results. We ask for input to determine our journey and encourage everyone to share their ideas.
Every quarter we gather everyone and go over our 10-year target, 3-year picture, 1-year plan and quarterly goals. Every week we get together and share personal stories as well as office wins. Everyday we gather to report back and ask for or offer help. Open and working together are key values at Six Feet Up.
Continuous Innovation
We live in a world of constant transformation. Therefore we are all encouraged to try new things and improve the way we serve our clients: new tools, new technologies, new gadgets, new processes, new methodologies, etc. Sixies are encouraged to bring up new ideas to help the company thrive. Many of us attend a variety of conferences to learn about novelties and new ideas out there.
ShipIt Week
In his book Drive, Daniel Pink described "ShipIt Days" as a tool to develop intrinsic motivation in a team.
During ShipIt Week, Sixies work on a project of their choice that they have to deliver within just a few days. People can choose who to work with, and how to work on their project. The company just makes sure they have the tools and resources they need. Teams often work on a project that has been pushed to the back burner repeatedly or on something that adds value but is not necessary for the daily function of the office. It could be a new idea, a prototype of a product, or a better internal process. The main requirement is that it must benefit the company.
Six Feet Up is having a ShipIt Week at the beginning of each year. Each event is an endless source of amazement at what can be achieved when motivation and "flow" are the driving forces.
Remote Ready Always
We have had remote Sixies for as long as we can remember. Everything is therefore organized around the concept of having team members not physically present. Starting in 2020, we transitioned to being 100% virtual. This was very easy as we are used to little paper-based documentation and very rare use of whiteboards. We enjoy a solid online chat and video conference culture. Everything is done online so remote Sixies, clients and partners can participate just as much as if they were in person.

Our Hiring Process
In line with our commitment to equitable and data-driven hiring, we use a multi-step approach to making sure we get the "right people in the right seats" ("RPRS").
First off, we start with your Predictive Index profile. The PI Behavioral Assessment aims to measure four primary characteristics of personality: dominance, extraversion, patience, and formality. These dimensions are used to predict workplace behaviors and to understand how an individual is likely to interact with colleagues, approach problem-solving, and adapt to the culture or dynamics of an organization.
Next, we'll have a brief and casual video call. This is our first shot to see how well you can articulate your thoughts and how you'd fit into our 100% remote environment.
Then comes the Kolbe behavior assessment. The Kolbe Index provides insights into how people will naturally take action, which can be invaluable for understanding how team members work together, what kind of work will make them most productive, and how they will approach problem-solving and decision-making.
Up next, you're in for a more thorough chat with a few Sixies. Think of it as a mutual reality check. We get a more rounded view of you, and you get a sneak peek into our culture and the people you'd be working with.
Finally, you'll go through the Working Genius assessment. This gives us the down-low on how you can contribute to team dynamics beyond just your job skills. It's how we make sure we're not just filling a seat, but adding to our collective brainpower.
So, that's how we do it. Efficient, thorough, and designed to get the best match for everyone involved.
Open Positions
The positions we are looking to fill are shown below.
IMPORTANT: Six Feet Up uses a data-driven approach to hiring. Before reviewing skills on a resume, Six Feet Up asks all potential employees to take personality assessments (see above). These assessments help minimize biases in our hiring process.
Although we list out what we generally look for, we are very likely missing other attributes and skills that you have that could make you a great fit, but are not currently listed. Research has shown this especially applies to women and other marginalized groups, who tend to apply if they check 100% of every box, versus men who apply if they hit roughly 60%. The point we're getting at, it doesn't hurt to take a chance and apply!
We look forward to meeting you!
