There are a lot of factors to consider when setting up a brand-new computer to develop using Python. On Episode 101 of The Real Python Podcast, Calvin Hendryx-Parker, Six Feet Up’s CTO and AWS Community Hero, shares some pointers and tools to help new and experienced developers set up their development computer. Calvin’s first rule: follow the Zen of Python.

“With Python being a language that’s easy for beginners to get started with and powerful enough for advanced people to do real work, it’s still hard to get your system bootstrapped,” Calvin says.

In the episode, Calvin discusses:

• why you shouldn’t use sudo or the system version of Python,
• installing pyenv to manage multiple environments and Python versions; and
• using Docker containers and piptools to manage dependencies.

Calvin touches on these topics and more as a means to going from out-of-the-box to development ready with a new computer in hours instead of days. He even talks about tools you can use to develop using an iPad.
