"Functional Programming in Python" at November 2021 IndyPy

The November 2021 edition of IndyPy — Indiana’s largest Python meetup founded in 2007 by Six Feet Up CTO and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Community Hero, Calvin Hendryx-Parker — featured an engaging presentation about functional programming and how functional programming works with Python.

Jeff Licquia, a software engineer at the Linux Foundation, encourages developers to not be scared of functional programming. “You can go as deep as you want, or you can be the type of person who doesn't know what a monoid is,” said Jeff. “The important thing is that you practice functional programming because it makes your code better.”

In his presentation, Jeff shares four takeaways:

  • Good programming practices are important, functional or not.
  • There’s something to be said about being practical.
  • Keep it simple…
  • Python makes it easy!
