Hacking Django Channels at PyOhio 2021

Calvin Hendryx-Parker, Six Feet Up’s CTO and AWS Community Hero, presented a 10-minute Thunder Talk on “Hacking Django Channels for Fun (and Profit)” at PyOhio — a non-profit annual Python community conference.

In his talk, Calvin highlighted how web developers can leverage Django channels in unconventional ways, including:

  • how to use websockets with Django’s async event loops — including a live demo of how Slack is integrated in a virtual event platform, LoudSwarm by Six Feet Up; and
  • how to hack background workers to connect to remote services like Discord — including an explanation of how integrating Slack into LoudSwarm differs from integrating Discord which requires Django to talk to both Discord and the client over websockets.
