The IEEE Information Theory Society (ITSOC) is an international organization whose purpose is to connect people interested in processing, transmission, storage, and use of information, as well as theoretical and applied aspects of coding, communications, and communications networks.
ITSOC came to Six Feet Up to provide resolution on a majority of 504 timeouts and site slowness that their user community was experiencing on random requests to the site.
After investigating possible options and assessment of their current setup, it was noted that memory for instances were sometimes getting out of control and running the server into swap. To help resolve the amount of 504 timeouts their users were seeing and increase performance an upgrade to Zope was performed. With the upgrade was a fix to avoid memory leaks. Also the web server software Nginx was replaced with Apache to aid in curing the issues ITSOC was having.
Since Six Feet Up optimized the site response times have stayed within normal ranges and 504 errors have only occurred in extreme conditions.
Organizations interested in resolving regular errors or increasing performance of their website are encouraged to contact Carol Ganz, Six Feet Up's Director of Customer Relationships, to investigate options.
