Calvin Hendryx-Parker, Six Feet Up’s CTO and AWS Community Hero, weighed in on an innovative approach to cloud backup during a recent Gestalt IT Tech Field Day Showcase.
Calvin was one of a handful of delegates who heard from Subbiah Sundaram, senior vice president of products at HYCU, about the company’s multi-cloud backup solution, Protégé. Protégé is designed to deliver data mobility, protection and backup capabilities as a service across public and private cloud environments. It is light-weight, scalable and application aware, and works for apps and databases alike.
Calvin penned an article, "Cloud Native Services Require Extra Care in Multi-Cloud Environments," where he applauded Protégé’s goal of being purpose-built for every cloud, but noted there is still more work to be done in the field.
"It still feels like the early days in the journey of fully backing up and protecting cloud native services across cloud vendors," wrote Calvin. "The last piece of the puzzle will likely require cloud vendors to allow access to DBaaS snapshots in a way that doesn’t require a full restore to back that data up."
In two presentations to the delegates, Subbiah touted a number of Protégé’s benefits, including:
"As much as we'd like to see everything on one cloud, it's not a reality. Most customers have multi-cloud, so you have to have a multi-cloud strategy," Subbiah said.
